Firefly Robotics Educational Charity were honoured to be able sponsor the robotic design event, at the North Devon Robotics challenge 2026. Our charity is focused on promoting STEM in Devon and Cornwall mainly to key stage 2 students through learning how to program Edison Robots which the charity provides to local schools free of charge.
This year’s design challenge at North Devon College, with its focus on maritime industry, seemed a perfect way of developing and channelling students’ attention to the design process and answering the common question of how can we, enable technology to help us in our day-to-day tasks or how can these devices help protect our planet.
Judges were impressed with the range of designs and ideas that were developed for this competition. Most were focused on the urgent need to improve the quality of ocean floors, but some were concerned about welfare of maritime life and a standout project from South Molton Community College developed a robot to monitor the invasive Lionfish by developing a robotic drone camouflaged as a Lionfish.
All the entrants provide outstanding presentations and offered insight to the reasoning for their designs. The winning entry went to Kingsley school who had a real in depth understanding of how they could remove waste from the ocean floor and even built a working model.
Congratulations to all teams for taking part in this year’s competition. A prize of £50 has now been issued to the winning team.
