Our charity relies wholly upon a team of volunteers, driven by the desire to pass on their knowledge and understanding to the next generation.
Am I able to volunteer?
Yes, if you are able to spare the time. Workshops run for 2-3 hours either in the morning or the afternoon, and you can select which ones you attend depending upon when you are free. We also run challenges for older students and these currently run once a year 4-6pm at Petroc FE College.
What skills do I need?
We have many resources and information to bring you up to speed on the robots, the coding, the challenges including lesson plans. Beyond reading these you will need to be able to talk clearly to young children, be good at facilitating their learning through trial and error – and have a bucketful of patience with a sense of humour!
Who will be with me?
We work in small groups and you will be with others who have run the workshops before. There are also teachers, and sometime volunteer parents to help as well.
What will I get out of the experience?
A great sense of achievement is what the other volunteers say they receive: The activities are fun and it is great to watch the children engaged in the activities, asking questions and enthusiastic about such vital skills. You are shaping futures, and supporting the pipeline of programmers and coders needed for industry. You will also meet other volunteers and join our community.
I am interested, what happens next?
If you wish to find out more, please email us to chat it through.
We also require all our volunteers to sign up and acquire a DBS check through the STEM Ambassador website. Click on the link and then the green button, ‘become a STEM Ambassador’. Again, any questions, please email.
